The Supplements

Once you polish your Common App Personal essay, you will be writing supplements to your application. Each school will ask you to demonstrate your strength of thought through writing.

Each school’s supplements are unique to the school. You may find something like the University of Maryland’s prompts that ask for short responses such as: If I could travel anywhere, I would go to… (160 characters), or NYU’s prompt that asks, “Why NYU”?, or even Cornell’s School of Engineering: “How do your interests directly connect with Cornell Engineering?”

College Admission officers state time and time again that they do not want to see a formula-based supplemental essay.
